  15. <p>    Au revoir Bastille, allo Toddlin' Town. That is the fate of
  16. French conductor Daniel Barenboin, 46, whose appointment to be
  17. musical director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was announced
  18. last week. He will replace Georg Solti, 76, who officially
  19. retires in 1991. Meanwhile, Barenboim will conduct part time.
  20. He may need the work. The French government last month removed
  21. him as head of the Opera de la Bastille, partly because of his
  22. $1.1 million salary and highbrow tastes. His Windy City plans
  23. include joint ventures with museums and schools. Says he: "I
  24. hope the cultural life of Chicago might be more than the sum of
  25. its parts."
